Licensing Requirements for Firefighters

FIREFIGHTER DRIVERS LICENSE
Driver Licensing for Firefighters

Becoming a firefighter in British Columbia requires extensive training, physical fitness, and the right licensing to operate emergency vehicles. One key requirement is obtaining a Class 3 automatic driver’s license, which allows firefighters to drive fire trucks and other heavy emergency vehicles. If you’re preparing to apply for a firefighting position, understanding the Class 3 automatic licensing requirements in BC is essential.

Why Firefighters Need a Class 3 Automatic License

Fire trucks and other emergency response vehicles are classified as heavy-duty vehicles due to their size and weight. In BC, a Class 3 automatic license is required to operate vehicles with more than two axles, such as fire engines, dump trucks, and other large trucks. Having the correct license ensures that firefighters can safely drive emergency vehicles while responding to calls under high-pressure conditions.

Steps to Obtain a Class 3 Automatic License for Firefighting

If you’re looking to become a firefighter and need to obtain your Class 3 automatic driver’s license in BC, here are the steps you’ll need to follow:

1. Meet the Basic Requirements

To be eligible for Class 3 automatic driver training in BC, you must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Hold a valid Class 5 driver’s license.

  • Have no driving prohibitions or suspensions.

  • Meet the medical fitness standards set by ICBC.

2. Pass the ICBC Knowledge Test

  • Before starting your practical training, you’ll need to pass the Class 3 automatic knowledge test at an ICBC licensing office.

  • The test covers commercial driving regulations, vehicle safety, and emergency response procedures for heavy trucks.

3. Complete an Air Brake Course (If Required)

  • Most fire trucks are equipped with air brakes, meaning you’ll need an air brake endorsement on your license.

  • You can complete an air brake course in BC either online or in person at an approved driving school.

4. Enroll in Class 3 Automatic Driver Training

  • Enrolling in a Class 3 automatic driver training program will help you develop the skills needed to handle large emergency vehicles.

  • Training covers pre-trip inspections, defensive driving, and maneuvering fire trucks in emergency situations.

5. Pass the Class 3 Automatic Road Test

  • The final step is to take and pass the ICBC Class 3 automatic road test.

  • The test evaluates your ability to operate a fire truck or other large vehicle safely, perform a pre-trip inspection, and execute backing and turning maneuvers.

Additional Licensing Requirements for Firefighters

In addition to obtaining a Class 3 automatic license, firefighting applicants may need:

  • A First Aid certification (often Occupational First Aid Level 1 or higher).

  • A clean driver’s abstract with minimal infractions.

  • Specialized training in emergency vehicle operations.
