CLASS 1 (MELT) FUNDING

Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT)

In British Columbia, Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) is a crucial requirement for all Class 1 learner's license holders. It mandates a minimum number of training hours, including classroom instruction, yard time, and behind-the-wheel driving, to be completed before attempting an ICBC road test. The program is delivered exclusively by licensed driver training schools in BC and has been in place since October 2021.

MELT Training Overview

The MELT program in BC is designed to ensure that new commercial drivers are well-prepared to handle diverse driving scenarios with safety and confidence. Completing the program requires 140 hours of training, which includes theoretical and practical components. The cost of Class 1 training typically ranges from $10,000 to $20,000. While this investment may seem significant, the average wage of commercial drivers allows most trainees to repay their tuition within their first year on the job.

Financial Support Options

Recognizing the financial commitment of completing the MELT program, several funding options are available to help offset the costs. Below, we outline some ways aspiring drivers can secure financial assistance to cover the cost of their training:

  • Flexible payment plans: Many driving schools, including our Burnaby professional driving school, offer affordable financing options to make tuition manageable.

  • Government programs: Some provincial and federal initiatives provide grants or loans for vocational training, including Class 1 MELT training in BC.

  • Employer sponsorship: Many companies in the trucking industry are eager to hire qualified drivers and may sponsor a portion of the training costs for new recruits.
