Tips to Help New Drivers Deal with Traffic

January 21, 2017

Driving in busy streets or rush hour traffic is frustrating for everyone. Moving at snail pace, some drivers start to become impatient, agitated, and aggressive. This can be scary and stressful for new drivers. This is why at our North Vancouver driving school, we like to take our students out into heavy traffic. We think its better that everyone experiences this with a professional driving instructor sitting next to them. For those that aren't as fortunate, our driving school North Vancouver has put together a list of tips to help you deal with heavy traffic:

1) Get rid of any distraction

When you are surrounded by cars, buses, trucks, and motorcycles, there is a lot going on. The last thing you need is a cellphone in your hands or a distracting friend in the front seat. Make sure your focus is on the road and surrounding vehicles, and not on anything else in your vehicle!

2) Signal!

Nothing irritates other drivers more than when someone cuts in front of them without signalling. Not only does this cause more traffic (since everyone behind you has to slam on their brakes), but it also puts you at a much higher risk of getting rear-ended. Always signal and ensure it is safe to change lanes!

3) Relax

People often lose patience while stuck in traffic. Don't pay attention to aggressive drivers, and definitely don't become one! Put on some relaxing music, and try your best to not get annoyed with other drivers.

4) Leave extra space

Always leave room between cars in front and behind you. Tailgating someone puts you at risk for a fender-bender.

To learn more about driving in traffic, give our driving school in North Vancouver a call today and set up a lesson! Be sure to tell them you are looking for practice driving in traffic so we know when to schedule you.
